Lagos State High Court on Friday sentenced Lekan Shonde to death by hanging for killing his wife, Ronke Shonde.

51-year-old Lekan, a depot worker in the Apapa area of Lagos State, was found guilty of the murder of his wife for allegedly beating her to death in 2016.

He was alleged to have locked the door on the corpse and their two children before the incident was discovered by a housekeeper and later reported to the police.

Lekan denied beating his wife’s death. According to report, he was always in the habit of beating her at every slight provocation. He also accused her of constantly cheating on him and refusing to cook for him. He added that she was cheating on him with one Kayode, the general manager of a publishing company, and they had an argument about it the night before, but he claimed he didn’t beat her to death.

Delivering the judgement on Friday, Justice Josephine Oyefeso sentenced Lekan to death based on the conviction that he killed his wife, despite his insistence that he only slapped her.
